HISTORY OF SYRACUSE MUSIC "OFFICIAL SITE"- CHAPTER 131 - CAREER OF CHARLIE BERTINI & 30- YEARS OF THE APPLEJAZZ FESTIVAL

This Cortland, NY native started playing trumpet at age nine. During his youth Charlie was active in marching bands, concert bands, school chorus and even conducting music classes. Bertini started his own dance band while still in ninth grade. At age 19, he joined the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus Orchestra touring for six years first as trumpeter and then musical director..

Next performances with Al Martino, Patti Page, Mel Torme, Broadway Shows, Dixieland Clubs and live shows in Orlando at both Walt Disney World and Universal Studio. Then came a four-year hitch at the Circus World Theme Park and a year as musical director for Ringling Brothers & Barnum Bailey Circus.

Always in demand as a world-class trumpeter Charlie Bertini has backed up Paul Anka, Bert Bacharach, Ray Charles & Johnny Mathis. He has appeared on network television specials and several music specials aired by PBS.

Charlie Bertini's AppleJazz Band history dates back to a jam session in 1984. His 1990's AppleJazz Band included the talents of John Kane, Larry Arlotta, Dave Hanlon, Dick Chave, Dave Gannett to name a few. His 1995 AppleJazz concert was nominated for a Cable Ace Award for "Best Music Program".

Bertini has released five solo Cd's "Apple Sass" (1995), "Jewels", "Acid Dixie" (recorded live at AppleJazz Festival held at Dwyer Memorial Park in Little York, NY), "Out of the Season" and "Charlie Bertini's AppleJazz Band-Classic Performances". Bertini also recorded two Christmas Cd's " Christmas Cookies" and "Fresh Batch" (1998). If this isn't enough Charlie has recorded 12 albums with Bill Allred's Class Jazz Band. During his amazing career, Bertini has performed in 45 states, China and Europe. Although residing in Florida and performing in jazz trios, Charlie still finds times to serve  executive director of the AppleJazz Festival held through year 2014 in Central New York.

His July 4, 2005 Apple Jazz Festival again at Dwyer Park Pavilion featured a lineup of Ronnie Leigh, Ronnie France, Dave Hanlon, Terry Meyers, Dick Chave, Jeff Phillips, John Allred and Bertini.  In June 2006 Bertini released the two-disc set "Classic Performances" from his 14th through 16th annual summer AppleJazz concerts (1997-99).  This unique three-year Cd package contains performances from some of CNY greatest musical talents including- Joe Whiting, John Kane, David "Rock" Feinstein, and Loren Barrigar.

The years flew by AppleJazz 25 featured Peter Dean (Dean Brothers) along with mainstays Doyle, Hanlon, Kane, France, Whiting, Bertini and others. Meanwhile AppleJazz Records release Cds by Lauren Jessica Bertini " Can You Hear It" (2009), "Charlie Bertini- "Triology" & "Out of Season" plus the great Ronnie Leigh's first solo Cd Live at AppleJazz (2012).

Charlie also returned to Central New York taking the stage in a salute to a friend Ronnie James Dio during Cortland's "Stand Up and Shout" Dio Tribute Concert & Benefit on July 10, 2011.

After a year layoff Charlie Bertini announced that he would hold his 30th and final AppleJazz Festival on May 31, 2014 at Dwyer Memorial Park. Once again the CNY greats responded to Bertini's invitation to play- Ronnie Leigh, Joe Whiting, Mark Doyle, Dave Hanlon, Ronnie France, Jeff Phillips, John Allred, Terry Meyers, & Lauren- Jessica Bertini. Other music industry notables in attendance included Frank Malfitano, Holly Gregg, "Rock" Feinstein, Laura Brazak & Ron Wray. A great tribute to a great man- Charlie Bertini..

In what I would call a great historic event it was announced by Frank Malfitano that the AppleJazz band would reunite in the summer of 2015 to perform at Syracuse's  M&T Jazz Festival.

HISTORY OF SYRACUSE MUSIC "OFFICIAL SITE" - CHAPTER 126 - JIM O'BRIEN "34 YEAR SYRACUSE RADIO LEGEND"

James L. O' Brien or "OB" as he was known was born on March 26, 1943.  He graduated from St Anthony of Padua High School in Syracuse in 1961. Jim without question was one of the great guys ever involved in the CNY music scene. Jim was first heard on WNDR Radio AM-1260 as the "Boy Owl" back in 1961, but through the years was also known as "King of the DJ's" and "Dean of the Dawn". With a year off to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard (1965) Jim returned staying at WNDR AM 1260 along with its sister station WNTQ FM for career totaling 34 years until his departure from WNTQ FM in October 1995. During his radio career "OB' played Rock & Roll, Golden Oldies and later country music formats.

Jim O'Brien's air shift times though the years included All-Nights, 2-6 PM (1963) and later  7- 11 PM and some morning while also holding the title of WNDR's music director. The popular Syracuse band Sam & The Twisters recording the Jim O'Brien theme song to the music track of "Wild Weekend"..It went something like- It's the Jim O'Brien show, 1260 radio on your dial...etc.

WNDR highlights- Jim boarded a bus filled with WNDR listeners and headed to Shea Stadium to see The Beatles perform back on August 15, 1965. And how about OB & "Dandy Dan"  Leonard sleeping a week in the front window of Walt's Record Shop on So. Salina Street to raise money to help the M.D.A. There are many-many more..

He was inducted into the "Syracuse Area Music Awards" (SAMMYs) Hall of Fame in 1997. Jim became ill in 2003 and a huge benefit was held in this honor on November 15 at the Onondaga Valley American Legion Post. Bands playing this great benefit included Gary Dunes & The Del-tunes, Carman Licitra & The Vikings with Dave Novak, The Fab Five (Novak, Gary Frenay & Arty Lenin), The Cobblerockers (Jan Fetterly, Al Wolf, Tim Cleary), Dan Elliott & The Monterays (Dan Elliott, Dave Moziak, George Day, Jack Abert, John Wisnewski, others ) and Ted & Amy from WNTQ..

Sadly our friend Jim O' Brien a true Syracuse music & radio legend and a great guy passed away on Saturday April 30, 2005 at age 62. Jim is buried in Syracuse's Onondaga Valley Cemetery.

PS- Jim was also a great help in our quest to obtain information when we started the "History of Syracuse Music" album series and  book projects. "OB" was also an avid golfer (Liverpool C.C and Bellevue Country Club) and a true NY Yankee baseball fan...His favorite music artists included Neil Diamond & Emilou Harris.

## First I would like to thanks Ronnie James Dio's family and friends for allowing me to make this historic presentation this evening.

To everyone of us Ronnie James Dio's career may mean something different. To some of us, Ronnie was family, other a friend, a bandmate, a neighbor, lead singer of The Redcaps, Prophets, Electric Elves, Elves, ELF, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and of course DIO.

I first met Ronnie back in 1963 and his musical relationship with Syracuse lasted close to 50 years. From 3 Rivers Inn, Sports O Rama, Yellow Balloon, Brookside, War Memorial, Landmark Theater to the largest stages and arenas in the world as he performed in over 41 different countries.

A truly amazing singer who easily could have been performing in Las Vegas, but lucky for us, he chose the Rock & Roll path.

A fantastic recording career with many awards, gold & platinum albums and selling over 41+ million recording. Ironically a new Ronnie James Dio Cd tribute will be released by Rhino Records on April 1, 2014, featuring Metallica, Motorhead & some of the biggest names in the music industry.

I've invited some of Ronnie's family and special bandmates to join me on stage this evening..

I'd like to introduce- his son, a good friend to the Syracuse Music community- Dan Padavona

David "Rock" Feinstein- SAMMY'S Hall of Famer and Ronnie's cousin who teamed with Ronnie in the Elves, ELF and played on Ronnie's final recording "Metal Will Never Die" and is currently still tours the World with The Rods.

Mickey Lee Soule - great keyboardist and member of ELF & Rainbow and is still touring the World with Deep Purple.

Dick Bottoff - longtime Dio guitarist with both Ronnie Dio & The Redcaps & Prophets..

Jim Pantas - famed Dio & The RedCaps & Prophets manager and brother of the guitar great Nick Pantas who was Ronnie's best friend and started there very first band together in 1958.

Also would also like to mention some of Ronnie's special friends who are with us this evening- Harold Hyde, Carl Canedy, Ron Kaussner & "Mr 805" Dave Porter.

If I have any regrets in my music career, one would be that Ronnie is not here this evening to enjoy this great Central New York salute.

We will end this great evening with Ronnie's own words that he spoke to me in one of our last interviews- "Ron it was a pleasant surprise for me knowing I was going to speak to you and to Syracuse."

"The best to everybody there. Gold bless for being as nice to me as they have been and in a great way making all this possible for me" (Ronnie James Dio).

It is my great honor to welcome the great Ronnie James Dio into the Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame by honoring him with our highest honor- the Syracuse NewTimes "Lifetime Achievement Award"

(Ron Wray then presents the SAMMY to David "Rock" Feinstein & Dan Padavona, who both say a few words)

Ron then intro's longtime manager Jim Pantas who managed Ronnie's first band back in 1958. (Jim says a few words and tell a very quick story about become Ronnie first band manager)...

Ron then  invites back SAMMY's MC- Dan Frisina who ends this historic evening....

Many photos are taken of all on stage. Pantas, Bottoff, Soule, Feinstein, Padavaona & Wray.

SYRACUSE AREA MUSIC UPDATES- FEBRUARY 16, 2014... Passing of our friend Mike Casale

Very sad to report the passing of longtime CNY musician Mike Casale on Sunday February 16, 2014...We first remember Mike & Gary Sprague teaming in the duo "Neighborhoods Friends" for many-many years (18). Gary later shared the stage with Bobby Green & A Cut Above and most recently with Irv Lyons.  He was served as Office Manager at Beat Street Music. Mike Casale was a great friend and  will be missed by all of us in the Central New York Music Community.
