May 1, 1963 - Ronnie Dio and the Prophets are still packing DOMINO'S Restaurant Wednesday and Sunday nites.
The success story of RONNIE DIO AND THE PROPHETS and DOMINO'S Restaurant is not hard to understand. Ronnie Dio and The Prophets, Domino's has one of the "great' musical groups in the East. The club could accommodate large crowds without taxing its' capacities. The right entertainment and young aggressive management has made DOMINO'S "The place where its at" in Central N.Y. and its has taken just seven short months.

ABOUT RONNIE DIO AND THE PROPHETS

Main Street in Cortland has been "Swing Street" Central, N.Y. due to the tremendous popularity of one of the "great musical ensembles anywhere". RONNIE DIO AND THE PROPHETS. Ronnie Dio has played all the top campuses in the East and worked side by side with some of the big names in today's entertainment world. This album demonstrates the versatility and class of RONNIE'S fine voice and the secret strength of the fine musicians who have played together for 3 1/2 years. There is little doubt in the minds of those who are fans of this group, that they will crash through nationally. This could happen with the latest RONNIE DIO single release "Swingin' Street" inspired , in part, by the great response to DIO AT DOMINO'S.

HISTORY OF SYRACUSE MUSIC "OFFICIAL SITE" - CHAPTER 114 - THE EMERALDS 1955-1958

This highly regarded Syracuse 1955-58 Syracuse vocal group consisted of Syracuse natives Greg Tearney (age 16 who attended Nottingham High School), James Royal (age 18) his brother Tom Royal (age 22) and James Fagan (age 18). The group never released any songs professionally but did record a 4-song demo at Syracuse's Dufford Studio that included the classic song "School Boys Love" (also Red Top) that is included on our History of Syracuse Music album series.

By 1957 the quartet have been singing together for almost two years and have appeared mostly in area clubs, schools and local functions. They also played the Cotton Club in Rochester and appeared many times at talent shows the Syracuse War Memorial.

One of the earliest 1957 performance we have found was a show billed as "The Great Record Show" at Syracuse's Jefferson Street Armory (Feb 8, 1957) for DJ's Bill Thrope (WFBL) & Chet Whiteside (WNDR). That February they also appeared with Jim DeLine on WSYR TV and then Feb 14, 1957 sang at the War Memorial during a Syracuse Nationals NBA basketball game vs Rochester. March 2 came an engagement at the Jewish Community Center teaming with the Syracuse University band the Orange Peels.

October 13, 1957, The Emeralds played at benefit at the VA Hospital for their "Helping Hands Event". That day they sang and shared the stage with the Bigtree Sisters (Norma, Jean and Sandy), Melo Wiley and others making it a great success.

Other 1957 dates brought the Emeralds to Nottingham High School singing during halftime for a football game (November 1, 1957) and ended the year December 20, 1957 playing a Radio Talent Show at the War Memorial in Syracuse with headliner Thurston Harris who had the national hit "Little Bitty Pretty One". Others on that show included The Eldaros (Bobby Green), Jennie Lee Lambert (mother of current CNY singer Lisa Gentile), Rhythm Cadets (Otis Smith & Bebo Singleton), Tex Roe (Cortland area country singer), Johnny Carlo (Decca Records artist), Bobby Hosid and others.,

Benefits at the Veterans Hospital was a regular part of the Emeralds schedule. They also worked on a recording deal, that resulted in a 4-song demo mentioned above.

April 18, 1958 The Emeralds shared the Lincoln Auditorium stage with Louis Armstrong & His All-Star band. A few week later (May 7, 1958) came the Syracuse Youth Rally before a packed crowd at the War Memorial with the 4 Vagabonds, Dick Van Dyke, National Baseball Hall of Famer- Jackie Robinson, Jimmy Randolph, Norma Smith and Danny Rose along with some of show business brightest prospects.

The Emeralds were tremendous vocal talents who were highly regarded in the entertainment field (1955-58).

Greg Tearney became a famed national black belt and a top instructor owning his own business. He was recently inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame (Oct 2013). One of the Royals Brothers became Ast. Principal at my old school Grant Junior High.

HISTORY OF SYRACUSE MUSIC "OFFICIAL SITE"- CHAPTER 112 - THE PASSING OF ROCK LEGEND "LOU REED" AT AGE 71

We are very sad to near the news of the passing of music "Hall of Famer" Lou Reed at his home in Southampton, Long Island, NY October 27 at age 71. Another in a very long line of musical greats to have touched base in our Syracuse & Central New York music scene.

Born March 2, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY. He continued his education at Syracuse University in 1960 attending the College of Performing Arts & Sciences, graduating in June 1964. In 1961, Lou  had his own short lived show (Excursions on a Wobbly Rail) on campus radio station WAER-FM. By 1962 he had formed the Syracuse University band - L.A. (Lou Allan)  & The Eldorados. At the University was befriended and studied under the famed poet and writer Delmore Schwartz. After graduation he spent some time as a songwriter for New York's Pickwick Records before forming the legendary Velvet Underground (John Cale along with another SU alumni Sterling Morrison) and along came the popular hit song "Walk on The Wild Side."

After the Underground Lou expanded his career as a solo artist, and at one time was  produced by David Bowie. Among his more popular songs were' "Sweet Jane", "Vicious",  "Rock and Roll", Heroin" and album's- "Transformer", "Berlin"  and live "Rock and Roll Animal" to name a few....their were many others. More recently he recorded the album "Lu Lu" with the heavy metal band Metallica.

From there.... into the pages of "Rock & Roll" history.

Lou Reed and Velvet Underground was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

NOTE- For more on Lou Reed, see Chapter 14... SU Music Influences...
